comm 1 3rd reading “Figures of Orality”

How does food become the center of power and relations between master and slaves?

Indeed the phrase, “Food is an obsessive concern between slaveholders and slaves”, is true and much related to the idea why food is used as the center of power and relations between master and slaves. In the context, the slaves fully and precisely prepare the food which the master consumes. But in contrast, the slaves do not get enough and good food to eat that ends up in a situation where they would have to steal just to have a little something for their pallet. Clearly, it expressed that the master who have the power can easily oppressed the slaves.  Also, the slaves thoughtfully serve their masters, acting like foods that nourish them. But in return, the master is like a poisonous food, corrupting their entities with sufferings, or became a monster devouring the slaves with sexual abuses and wrong action. The relationship between them is obviously telling us that the slaves are goods for the master while the master is the other way around.

How is food associated with a mother?

A mother is associated with food in the sense that in a normal view of the world, she is always the queen of the kitchen, serving and caring her family with good and nutritious food. And a mother is like a food, because her own body provides the milk needed to nurse and nourish her little son or daughter.

What is the main idea on "DO NATIONS EXPRESS THEMSELVES ON THEIR FOODS?"

* In every food in every nation, there is always the reflection of their history, customs, and way of life.

Points that support the main idea:

  • Spain was once before an Arab land (for 800 years).  And because of this connection, the Arabs somehow influenced the way they look at dinning --how they nib leisurely on dishes—and at the tastes of their foods as well.

  • The Arabs and the Spaniards are very accustomed (even if they have warred with each other before) to siestas that reflect why they enjoy taking much time on eating. They find meal time as a relaxation for their senses.

  • In Arab places, the preparation of their foods takes a period of time which depicts the people’s way of life that is very particular in their foods and loves to relax and converse with others while in the edge of meal time. While in America, lots of fast-food chains are everywhere which also depicts the people who lives in a fast pace of life.

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it ok
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
They may be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an Angel fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference, escaping one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of an Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
In the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here
